I see most people offering painting workshops like mine, keep their lives simpler by proposing only one itinerary. Where I am, here in Arcos de la Frontera, there is just such an embarrassement of riches in the variety of fun & cultural options that I would like to get the group's (of six) input & make an itinerary according to the majority or by compromise. So please check out the activities page & tell me about any preferences with plenty of alternatives so we can tailor to the group. Exact dates will be decided as a group comes together, the cost for 8 days/7 nights is €1800 (October 1st- $2.560 U.S.) including what is described below.

We will pick you up from the Jerez de la Frontera airport & take you to the gorgeous 18th century cortijo in the countryside (about 6 kilometres, 4 miles, from Arcos) where you will stay 8 days/7 nights. We will conduct classes there at the cortijo, in the surrounding country-side (it has 300 hectares, 1000 acres of its own) & in a building I have directly behind the San Pedro cathedral in Arcos' old walled town. From the house's rooftop we can paint a previleged view of the country-side, uninterrupted in every direction but where the great pile of weathered sandstone, that is the church of San Pedro, rises monolithically above us at one end.

I do 4-5 hours of classes a day with a lunch break in between & I expect everyone to leave feeling his work has improved (including me!). We will work with a model, drawing painting & I always like to throw in a day in the middle with clay, I find a day working from three dimensions to three dimensions, instead of two, improves people's volumetric perceptions & their drawing has improved when we resume drawing or painting the next day. We can also work outside on landscape or on the portrait of an old olive tree, as each sees fit.

Breakfast & lunch are included & on the evenings when we find ourselves together after supper (especially in winter around the walk-in fireplace) we can have a group critique of each other's work up to that point. All transport & most excursions are included in the price (in some cases entry fees, drinks or suchlike are the responsibility of each individual).

The biggest excursion that would have to be decided on as a group is the trip to Morocco but the expenses are minimal- €31 each way for the ferry & anything bought in Tangiers will earn that back, at least if you're good at haggling!

On the eighth day after lunch we will drop you off at the Jerez airport where most of you will catch connections out of Madrid an hour away or Malaga- a 20 minute flight or hour & a half drive.

To bring:

You are welcome to bring any tools that are old friends but the range of materials we will use is not very big & easily available here, we can either take you in to Jerez to shop or provide you with a kit that includes the things listed below for about 40 or €60.

I provide easels

1- palette

2- a few brushes

3- canvas or boards which, though heavier, are easier & smaller to pack when you leave.

4- drawing paper & pastel paper

5- about 6 tubes of paint

6- pencils, rubber eraser, watercolours if one likes, board & clip for backing the paper when drawing & at least one palette knife.
